Goslar
Goslar – the city that has two world heritage sites: The cosy and beautiful old town and the disused, impressive Rammelsberg mine.
The old town of Goslar was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992.
Due to its special state of preservation with more than 1500 half-timbered houses from different epochs, which are located in the old town centre within the former town wall, the old town of Goslar was awarded by UNESCO.
The city centre itself invites you to stroll and shop.
The town, which is situated on the edge of the Harz Mountains, is the perfect starting point for all kinds of leisure activities. As the highest mountain range in Northern Germany, bordering on the three federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, it has a lot to offer in addition to hiking, mountain biking and skiing.
Imperial Palace
The imperial palace and the cathedral vestibule which was built between 1040 and 1050, are well worth a visit. In 1820 the dilapidated church was demolished, leaving only its entrance hall.
The Palatine Chapel of St. Ulrich adjoining to the south contains the heart of the emperor, who died in 1056, under a gravestone with a figurative representation of Henry III.

The Hall of Homage in Goslar’s town hall is a unique gem of late Gothic spatial art.
Rammelsberg
The Rammelsberg, where ore was mined for over 1000 years, has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. The mine was closed down in 1988 and is now a museum and visitor mine.
Traces of mining from several centuries have been preserved in Rammelsberg. The Rammelsberg is one of the largest museums and visitor mines in northern Germany. The various guided tours, exhibitions, lectures and museum educational programmes bring the working world of the miners of past times back to life.
Maltermeister Tower
The round tower on the Rammelsberg above Goslar, built in the 14th century, is the oldest building of the surface installations of the nearby mine. Today, the Maltermeister Tower houses a restaurant with a panoramic terrace overlooking Goslar.

Wöltingerode Monastery in Vienenburg
In 1174 the monastery of Wöltingerode was founded and was one of the most important monasteries in Northern Germany.
Besides the books and codices highly appreciated by experts, Wöltingerode was famous for its excellent liqueurs and Klosteredelkorn from 1683 onwards!
Wöltingerode Monastery is located in Vienenburg, a district of Goslar.
Since its foundation in 1174 it served as a Benedictine monastery until 1188.
Today there is still a distillery in the historic building.
The distillation of schnapps follows a long tradition here, as Edelkorn and liqueurs from the monastery have been available since 1682. The original monastery brewery existed until 1803, but in 2004 this tradition was resumed.
The Wöltingerode Monastery is located directly on the Harz Monastery Hiking Trail.
High up on the treetop path in Bad Harzburg
Barrier-free and accessible for all age groups, this special hiking trail offers a unique view of Bad Harzburg’s nature.
On the 18 platforms of the approx. 1,000m long path, guests will find almost
50 different experience elements, resting places and interesting facts. Thematic tours on insects, nature or sunrise and sunset tours are only a small part of the programme.

From the 483-metre-high castle hill, the Harz Tree Suspension Railway takes you at a maximum speed of 12-15 km/h, floating through the changing tree population of the castle hill and the Cold Valley to the rear end of the treetop path.
The newest attraction in the Harz region offers breathtaking views, directly from the starting tower to the highest mountain in the Harz, the Brocken. Floating through old oaks and beeches, the path then descends in serpentines.
Spectacular heights alternate with real nature experience. The forest is close enough to touch.
Liebesbankweg & ErlebnisBocksBerg in Hahnenklee
The hiker can look forward to an individual circular hiking trail with “loving” benches and lingering zones, adventure opportunities for the whole family. The 7 km long Liebesbankweg is the first premium hiking trail in the Harz and Lower Saxony.
You can also find our Erlebnisbocksberg at an altitude of 727m in the health resort of Hahnenklee. This lovely place is in the middle of the beautiful Harz, only 15 kilometers from the historic city of Goslar. Our nostalgic cabin lift starts in the Hahnenkleer pedestrian zone. In a few minutes you can comfortably drive to the top. Our chairlift also starts at the foot of Erlebnisbocksbergs, this is how our mountain bikers go up. On the top awaits you several attractions such as Bocksbergbob, Spaßpark, Bocksbergcarts, Bikepark, Bocksberghütte and trails, fun and relaxation for the whole family.
Also discover the unique stave church.
A popular destination is the stave church Hahnenklee, which is unique in its construction and equipment among the church buildings in Germany. The building owner, Prof. Karl Mohrmann, of the Hanover regional church decided according to the typical regional timber construction in the Harz, for a stave church based on the Norwegian model.
wildly romantic Okertal and Oker Dam
The Okertal extends from Altenau in the Harz mountain to the Harz foreland, but it is the section between the Oker Dam and the Goslar district of Oker, from which this particular fascination emanates, which is often described as “wildly romantic” in travel guides. The Oker has worked its way into the rocks over 350 meters, over million of years, therefore today steep and bizarre rock cliffs, which are overgrown by dense forest, leave an awe-inspiring impression on hikers. There are only a few places in the Harz where nature is so varied and eventful.
Climbing rocks challenge the intrepid to climb the sometimes vertical walls, while below them the Oker flows down the valley in its stony, natural stream bed with a strong current. In the picturesque course of the river there is an “engagement island” that can only be reached via a wooden staircase, the waterfall at Romkerhall, several smaller hydroelectric power plants inserted into the narrow valley, and the compensation basin of the Oker dam.
Above the valley, several viewpoint rocks made of huge granite blocks – for example the goat back cliffs, the fig tree cliff or the stone staircase – offer an impressive view. The same applies of course to the 75 meter high, huge dam of the Oker reservoir.
UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Harz Water Regale
What seems to us today like a quiet and romantic lake and pond landscape with historical buildings along the way is by far the largest and most important pre-industrial energy supply system worldwide.
The water management consists of 107 historic ponds, 310 kilometers of ditches and 31 kilometers of watercourses. Here, water is collected, stored and discharged – for example in one of the drinking water reservoirs in the Harz Mountains.
Hikers and Walkers like the paths along the trenches. In 2010, the Upper Harz Water Management was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List and has completed the trio of Goslar Old Town, Rammelsberg ore mine and Upper Harz Water Management.
Nationalpark Harz – legendary mountain wilderness
Many untouched natural elements such as block heaps, raised bogs,
rivers and forests are preserved here.
The Harz National Park is particularly impressive for the variety of its natural features. On its north and south edges we find extensive beech forests, which are particularly attractive for a hike in spring and autumn. Moors, spruce forests and rocks shape the picture in the highlands of the Harz Mountains.The Upper Harz Moors are among the best preserved and most impressive in Germany. Several animal and plant species which have become rare can be found here.
In 2006 Harz became the first National Park in Germany
to cover two federal states.
The Brocken is located in the middle of the Nationalpark.
Wernigerode
The old town of Wernigerode offers a multifaceted picture with many restored half-timbered houses. Artfully painted windows and doors, colorful compartments and imposing beam constructions conjure up a colorful ambience.
Hermann Löns called Wernigerode the colorful city in the Harz Mountains.
The mighty castle towers over the old town.
The most famous buildings in Wernigerode are the gothic house, Café Wien and the historic town hall as a brilliant focal point. There are many other sights in Wernigerode such as „Schiefe Haus“, Luftfahrtmuseum, Harzer Baumkuchenhaus, Glasmanufaktur Harzkristall, Miniaturenpark “Kleiner Harz”.
Thale – legendary and mystic
The town of Thale, located on the northeastern edge of the Harz Mountains, can look back on a history spanning more than a thousand years and is inextricably linked with the mystical Bodetal.
These excursion destinations have made Thale widely known, next to other destinations, SeilbahnenErlebniswelt – float like a hawk.
